Wonder Man flew under my radar, and somehow I became aware of it this weekend. Said and done, 8 episodes later I had plowed through the entire “mini”-series in one weekend.
I’m no super-nerd when it comes to comic books, so I knew nothing about Wonder Man before I started watching. This series is dialogue-driven, and deals more with daily life than large-scale invasions or threats from outer space like other Marvel stories. Wonder Man is well-written, with good acting and interesting cinematography. It switches easily between humor, drama, and action. Sometimes within the very same scene. A couple of times I was surprised when you think this is a lighthearted scene, but it quickly switches to a close-up and you can almost touch the emotions reaching out through the screen.
There is an episode that is standalone, but which lays the foundation for the choices Simon makes. But for me, standalone episodes are a bit of a hit or miss. Like in The Last of Us, it was one of the better episodes of the entire season, but here one could perhaps have done without it. There are also a few moments when the pacing becomes a bit too slow, and you feel like skipping forward a little bit.
But on the whole, I was very positively surprised and the high rating perhaps explains a bit why I could binge the series without any problems.
There is also a reference to the following scene, and a cameo to look forward to.
